Then you might have heard about a number of breathing techniques that calm the nervous system, allowing us to breathe better. Same as a vast number of therapeutical methods, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) suggests a few easily accessible breathing techniques that can help us in managing depression, anxiety and even panic<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">By cultivating a better breathing pattern as part of our daily routine, we can start to shift the way we feel right now,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and eventually shift the way we perceive reality and our world. Building a better breathing awareness and breathing manipulation can help us to reach a state of calmness even in the hardest times of our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">All that said, how do we practice a more mindful breathing? One effective way is through first breathing while noticing how the body responds to each inhale and each exhale. The purpose of this practice is to relax the nervous system by bringing more oxygen into the body\u2019s vital organs, engaging organs that normally are not involved in breathing, like the diaphragm, and this creates a sense of control over the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7407\" src=\"http:\/\/colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1511\" height=\"2263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488.jpg 1511w, https:\/\/www.colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.colourfuldreamer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/KOR_6488-684x1024.jpg 684w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1511px) 100vw, 1511px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">ACT Breathing &#8211; Step-by-step:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Breathe out all the air you might have in the belly, the diaphragm and the lungs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Now breathe in as slowly as possible and breathe out<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Focus on what is happening in the body as you breathe \u2013 notice the sensations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Pause every moment between an in-breath and out-breathe<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Let any thoughts come and go as they please without trying to fight this<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Acknowledge any thoughts, then let them go, as you keep maintaining your attention to your breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Take 10 deep slow breaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As you breathe in, notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The tummy pushes inward<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Chest rising<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Shoulders lifting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lungs expanding<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Breaths insert the nostril<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As you breathe out, notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The tummy pushes outward<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Chest descending<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Shoulders dropping<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lungs squeezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Breath leaves the nostril<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">(Based on the 10 deep breaths exercise in the Happiness Trap book by Russ Harris)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever been so stressed that you felt short of breath?
